AUTUMN GREETINGS

Factory Shops

Although winter recently gave us a foretaste of what's to come, the balmy autumn weather we're presently experiencing definitely showcases Cape Town at its best. Unfortunately it can't last forever and it is anyone's guess how long these gorgeous warm days will linger.

Before the cold weather sets in, it is a good time to stock up with winter clothes at factory shops in the Western Cape. Factory shopping certainly offers wonderful ways to save money and the 12th edition of The A-Z of Factory Shops in the Western Cape contains information about where to find hundreds of these shops around the Peninsula.

TIPS WHEN BUYING A DUVET

In anticipation of the cold nights ahead, I know many of us will be seeking extra bedding and so I asked Lionel Lifson of the Duvet and Pillow Factory Shop (page 229) for some advice and watchpoints to bear in mind when purchasing a duvet. Lionel advised that:

  • It's important to check that the down has no odour and that the down casing is 100% cotton. The reason for this is that cotton breathes and will therefore allow any moisture to escape
  • when buying a down duvet there are different grades and a pure duvet should not be less than 80% down
  • as the purchase of a duvet is an expensive investment it is advisable to shop around. Lionel maintains that it is not necessary to spend thousands of rands in order to obtain a good quality duvet.

I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE

Sad to report that one of my favourite factory shops, Moniques (page 180) have unfortunately closed down.
Poly Nation (page 270) has moved their factory shop to 5 London Road, Salt River. Telephone number unchanged.

The Biggie Best Factory Shop in Access Park (page 122) has recently renovated its store. More fabrics, more gifts, more space!

Having shopped at the Green Cross Factory Shop (page 80) since I first discovered it twenty-eight years ago, I am thrilled (and I know many other factory shoppers will also be) to hear that they now offer credit and debit card facilities.
